Drak Theatre and International Institute of Figurative Theatre

The Drak Theatre is a theatre for children and youth from Hradec Králové, Czech Republic. Since the beginning (since 1958), its work has been based not only on the tradition of (East) Czech puppetry, but also on the principle of original authorial creation for children and adults based on imagination and inventive approach. Throughout its history it has often pioneered new methods and creative approaches and has won numerous awards in the Czech Republic and abroad.
Since 2010, Drak has expanded to include a second building, the Labyrinth, which houses a gallery with a permanent exhibition, The Story of Drak 1958-2018, a temporary exhibition space, a playroom, a studio stage and a workshop studio.
The Drak Theatre’s repertoire and programming is aimed at audiences as young as 6 months old through to teenagers and is anchored by a long-term project called “A Pilgrimage through the Theatre Landscape”, in which our experienced tutors sensitively guide young visitors through the theatre landscape from their very first steps to their teenage initiation into experiencing theatre fully and independently. For many children, the Drak is the place where they first come into contact with theatre/art and continue to grow with it over time.
Internation Institute of Figurative Theatre (MIFD) was founded at the initiative of Josef Krofta due to the “recognition of the necessity to study, research, and seek a new artistic face for children’s theater, so that it can fulfill its modern mission.” The institute was introduced to the public in 1993.
MIFD, primarily associated with the Labyrinth spaces of Drak Theatre, is a center that focuses not only on puppet collections but, more importantly, on creators—experienced artists, less experienced ones, or complete beginners. We see the research and creation at MIFD as an important investment in the future of theater for children and adolescents.
